Rum first appeared in the Caribbean (Martinique and Guadeloupe) and in French Guiana in the XVIIth century, and in the Indian Ocean (Réunion and Mauritius) in the XVIIIth century, and began to really develop in the XIXth century. It is nowadays one of the most popular spirits in the world.
